NERDS CAN’T DO SPORTS

Dumb wipeout near the bottom, big gash, lots of stitches. 😬

@_lhermann One thing there helped me move past a rut/fatigue and get the willpower to stay focused is to work alongside someone (“pairing”).

In the past:
- I’ve called up friends and asked them if they want to assist me
- Hired contractors to pair program with me
- Live-streamed coding

I just checked my billing history, and I've been a @ConvertKit user since Sept 9, 2013. 😮

Huge fan of what @nathanbarry and his team have built. 💪

@statamic This is great! I’d love a follow up post from the “camp organizer’s” perspective.

How was the event planned?
What did you learn?
What will you change?
What will you keep the same?
What should other retreat organizers know?

It’s perfect, because you get to talk about their journey, why they chose your product, how they use it, and what they wish was better.

"The idea that they're the people who created the technology; therefore they have special insight into the downstream impact on society and rules and regulations... does not hold up well historically."

So why are we listening to Marc? Because he created Netscape?

@liron @pmarca In Marc's opening statements, he seems to be telling us that we shouldn't be listening to people like him.

(folks who were experts in one thing [startups?] opining on general-purpose societal topics).

Irony: Marc portrays himself as a public intellectual and frequently opines on public policy matters.

But in this interview, he says we should disregard the insights of specialized experts who venture beyond their domain to adopt the role of general-purpose social thinkers.

@EricGombrich @mattwensing It applies in the B2B context more than we think it does. (But perhaps less so in Enterprise sales, I don't have much experience there)

I've been enjoying @mattwensing's newsletter.

I agree with him here, "target a real felt cost," but there's another feeling (besides pain) that motivates buying behavior:

DESIRE.

Some folks might have bought an iPod because they were tired of carrying 1000 CDs, but many bought…

I’ll go first: a hiring manager can received hundreds of applications. After a while, every resume looks the same.

Personally, I go straight to someone’s personal website to see what projects they’ve built.

I *do* think we can derive purpose from doing meaningful work.

When you find work that brings you joy and a sense of accomplishment it’s an amazing feeling.

But we need to be careful about putting too much personal weight on external validation for the projects we do.

Do the best you can.

Listen to the people you’re making things for.

Solicit good advice and feedback.

Keep what works, and discard what doesn’t.

Don’t derive your meaning and purpose from how people react to what you make.

You can’t control how people will react to the things you make.

Once you put something out into the world, it’s out of your hands.

Sometimes we give folks gifts they don’t like. It’s not optimal, but it’s not the end of the world either.

The point of this thread isn’t to discourage indie founders from trying; it’s to encourage you to make better bets.

Moving on from a bad bet gives you room to invest in better bets.

Build something people want (yes!), but count the cost.

As founders, we need to “think in bets.” Not all bets are good bets.

Encouraging folks to be prudent. 👍
