@DanielleMorrill @mbesto Sweet. Were you fully bootstrapped?

(Also, I'm curious [as someone's who's bootstrapping a new SaaS], how long before you hit sustainable revenue? That's what keeps me up at night.)

People say "I don't like unsolicited advice."

I think the deeper truth is people don't want to receive advice from folks they don't *trust*.

Without a context of trust, you'd be foolish to follow anyone's advice.

@mbesto @dohertyjf @tylertringas I'd love some examples!

I can't think of many (especially 40+!) who have bootstrapped a profitable SaaS only from customer revenues and hit enough revenue right away to live off it. Even in a 6-12 month window.

(I know quite a few folks that aren't in the limelight too)

@dohertyjf @mbesto @tylertringas With that in mind, most folks are going to have to look at other options (consulting, VC, rich family, etc...).

Being 100% bootstrapped (only using money from customers) isn't realistic in most cases. (Even for "boostrapped heroes" like Basecamp).

@dohertyjf @mbesto @tylertringas True. The bigger point is that if bootstrapping is "only funding your growth from customers" that means:

a) It's going to take awhile to hit a scale where you can pay yourself (it took Basecamp 2 years)
b) For many folks, not getting paid for months (or years) isn't realistic

@mbesto @dohertyjf @tylertringas Lately, I'm seeing less and less truly bootstrapped ("only use revenue from customers to grow") software products that go the distance.

The exceptions seem to be products started by young nomads. They have a very low cost of living. (Many are single, with no family, or mortgage)

⚡ There are two main benefits to a public launch:

1. It builds anticipation! When folks are excited about something in the future, it works in your favor. They're counting down the days.

2. On the day of the launch, people who are excited about your product WILL TALK ABOUT IT.
