Everything rises and falls on the quality of your business' market:

It's the foundation you build everything else on.

@nbashaw Lately, I’ve been feeling that “$ being spent on X” is more important in the beginning. It shows you where to dig for oil.

After you know where to dig, the JTBD helps you figure out what to build.

@nbashaw I think JTBD is helpful in discovering what motivates customers to buy a product.

It doesn’t seem as good at quantifying the size of the opportunity.

If you’re interested in building remote tools, I wouldn’t be asking “how many remote workers are there?”

Instead, I’d ask: “how much was spent on remote tools in 2019? What types of tools were people spending money on? How many tools does a team use? Who makes those choices?”

Loved this interview with @csallen and @taylorotwell, because it illustrates the point well:

Your first step isn’t to generate good ideas.

Your first step is to find a good market.

Even if my math is wrong, the total market for PHP related skills, apps, infrastructure, education is likely in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

That’s an incredible market.

There’s a reason @laravelphp is kicking ass there: it’s a huge opportunity.

As an example:

There are 5 million PHP developers in the world.

Let’s say, on average, each gets paid $25,000.

That means, on salaries alone, the PHP market is...

When I say “market” I don’t just mean “a target group to sell to.”

I mean “X dollars was spent on Y.”

“The turkey market in 2017 was $4.87 billion.” 🦃

Too often, we’re looking for good ideas, when what we should be looking for is good markets.

There is no such thing as a “million dollar business idea.”

There are only million dollar *markets.*

You don’t find a good idea; you find a good market that needs a problem solved.
