Like a surfer, you look for rising tides. 🏄‍♀️

For example: the breakfast cereal market will reach $40 billion in 2023.

“But the cereal market is too entrenched!”

What if we combine it with all the demand for gluten-free foods?

My guess? GF cereal is 📈

One thing marketers, salespeople, devs, designers, and founders probably don’t want to hear:

When demand is really strong, you don’t even need to be that good!

Lots of “ok” businesses survive (and thrive) in captive markets.

It’s the *market you’re in* that will determines how big (and how fast) you’ll grow.

The market matters.

It’s the primary multiplier.

If your market is a zero, all your other efforts (no matter how good they are!) will net out to zero.

I’m beating this drum because I hear too many startup retroactives where the founder will say:

“We won because we had a great product.”

“We won because we solved a specific problem for a specific niche.”

“We won because we had an incredible team.”

Yes, but...

Strategy, product, sales and marketing all matters, but only if you’re in the right market.

Many of the successful founders you see didn’t win because of their brilliant idea or perfect execution.

More likely: they found (or stumbled into) a market with untapped (or growing) demand.

It all starts with the market!

@corey_gwin I'm familiar with that mad-lib. I think even that is too complex.

Our desires aren't always situational, and they don't always have an articulated outcome.

I think "customer demand" is way less sophisticated than we think it is.

The base impulse seems quite simplistic. Almost as if a prehistoric human was speaking:

"Want iPhone because friends have one."
"Want PDF report to make boss happy."
"Want chocolate because sad."

@petersuhm yes! when people discover a solution they’ve been looking for for a long time, they can’t stop talking about it. 👍

@mariepoulin What is it about this time of year?

I hardly ever eat chocolate (even at Halloween!) but when December rolls around I find myself buying (and eating!) chocolate bars all the time!

@arvidkahl I think past experience *can* be valuable (especially when it illuminates timeless principles). 👌

We just have to be discerning when we apply other people’s experience to our own lives.

The flip side: Spotify connects podcasters with a big new audience, and podcasters get to keep the revenue they make independently (ads, memberships, Patreon).

Fair trade?

BTW - I don't think podcasters *should* necessarily be paid to stream their content on Spotify (right now, individual shows can monetize however they please).

It's just interesting to observe the contrast between the different models (music vs podcasting).

@jessarchercodes In a way, they do. Spotify re-hosts the audio from your feed, meaning your podcast host doesn’t need to charge you for that download. 👍

Is it weird that musical artists get paid to stream on Spotify, but podcasters happily submit their tracks for free? 🤔

For listening to music at work, I still haven't found anything better than Soundcloud.

I've tried Apple Music and Spotify playlists, but nothing gives me great remixes and "related tracks" like Soundcloud.

@misener First I ask: "Do you listen to podcasts?"

If they say Yes: "Cool. Every podcast you listen to needs to be hosted somewhere (just like a website needs hosting). That's what my company does."

If they say No: "Would you like another glass of wine?"
