@abadir_ @Square Stores are already using Square for Point of Sale. Using their existing platform makes the most sense right now.

They just need a few tweaks to make this work for retailers.

@robertmpreston @Square Btw - only 1/5 retailers was able to pay for the custom domain upgrade, and he had to put it on a credit card he’s not sure he’ll be able to pay.

All of them are having a hard time moving to online sales.

They need any help they can get.

@robertmpreston @Square In the past week I’ve tried to help 5+ local retailers create an online store.

They’re already hemorrhaging cash.

They *already* pay Square 2.75% per swipe or 3.75% plus 15 cents for manually typed transactions.

I think offering free custom domains is the last they could do.

This is what mobile checkout currently looks like on @Square.

- Over 17 fields to fill out (most are required)
- Four different confirmation steps you have to step through

I know Square wants to support retailers during the crisis: this really needs to be streamlined.

@spencerfry @Square Square just announced tons of new stuff for retailers during this outbreak, but they're missing the biggest wins.

An expedited checkout experience is crucial.

Fixing bugs like this need to be a top priority.

Lots of retailers (who use @square) are trying to set up online stores right now.

To connect a custom domain costs a minimum of $84 / year or $11 / month.

They say they'll refund "March payments," but why not just make this free?

Retailers are already facing a steep curve.

There's lots @square could be doing to help retailers right now:

🤯 Mobile checkout requires SEVENTEEN different fields
❌ "Save information for faster checkout" is broken
🍎 No support for ApplePay
📱 There should be a "Starbucks-style" mobile app that allows you to pay + tip https://twitter.com/lizthegrey/status/1238639972590202881

@nbashaw It’s testing.

We need to look at all these numbers as:

“Cases as a % of tests”

And then we need to consider if they’re only testing those with extreme symptoms (which seems to be the case in most places)

@AndrewMedal @velosofernando Banks got $114B from Canadian governments in the 2008 recession.

The auto industry got $3.2B.

Air Canada got $1.2B in financial aid in 2009.

Government aid and spending is crucial during a disaster. I just want to make sure it’s allocated to the right folks.

@nphaskins @pippinsplugins Can you give me some examples of what that looks like in practice?

In our house:

Grade 12 - loves school, works really well with school structure

Grade 9 - ADHD. Doesn’t like school.

Grade 6 - loves school, easy to coach.

Grade 5 - difficulty reading, hates school.

@TimothyCavey @JustinTrudeau @WestJet @AirCanada I’m not in favor of an airline bailout unless there are lots of strings attached:

- we (the taxpayers) become the majority shareholders
- regular airline employees get assistance first (before execs)
- a ban on share buybacks
- CEOs have their salaries and bonuses frozen

I can’t emphasize this enough: any government aid for business should go to SMALL, local, main street businesses first.

They’ve been hit the hardest
