I listen to podcasts when I:
- go for a walk
- do yard work
- lay in the park
- do the dishes
- clean the garage
- at night before I sleep

When do you listen?

@nickswan Business ideas are observations (“people have this problem they’ll pay to solve”) paired with hunches (“I could solve it this way”).

The idea encompasses the opportunity you see + your take on how to solve it.

@drgurner It’s true. But lots of folks move for certain ammenities, recreation opportunities, good schools too. 👍

In my original tweet I said “remote” because when you don’t have to drive an office, it really opens up the world for you.

Why did @jacobwe decide to start making podcasts?

“There was a small (but growing) audience that loved them. And everybody at Slate who didn’t have a podcast, wanted one.”

@FindJimClair Scientists and researchers may have many ideas on why an event might be occurring, but they’ll often follow the hunch that shows the most promise.

Spreading yourself too thin, and exploring every possible avenue at once, isn’t efficient.

Before you start executing, you explore.

@derrickgrigg Yup. It definitely makes it more challenging.

@FindJimClair @rjs Sorry, missed this.

The idea is that you do most of your “shaping” before you start executing. This includes exploring (but not committing to) different ideas.

My thinking falls roughly in line with Basecamp’s shape up process:

Real estate listings are missing a big opportunity with remote workers.

Everything is based around searching a given town and area.

MLS should add “here’s what your money could buy you in 5 other regions of the world” to every search.

If you're not generating good ideas it's probably because:

- you haven't had enough experience in a given sector,
- you haven't learned to observe the way people behave,
- you haven't honed your instincts for recognizing the "pull" of a market.

Execution comes next.

But the results of your execution hinge on how good your original idea was.

How clear was your initial observation?

How correct was your hunch?

Business ideas are observations paired with hunches.

Observation: "This is what people are doing. This is what people want. This is where the market is headed."

Hunch: "Here's a way we could help people to get the result they want. (And do it better than what's available)."

@DanSchoonmaker @cnu The best solo podcasts are “vulnerable.”

Answer questions like:

- “What’s it like to be a ___?”
- “How does it feel to be in a situation like _____?”
- “How did you get to where you are today?”
- “What challenges are you facing right now? What options are you considering?”

@AndrewAskins @arvidkahl @hnshah It can be harder to find a good, profitable SaaS concept.

There’s generally more customer support.

The biggest is that you have more anxiety about uptime. With info-products you don’t have to worry about your whole system crashing.

- massive reduction in consumer and business spending?

And...

- which sectors of the economy will be affected? All of them?
