Transistor has a lot of “young shows” which get more plays on Spotify.

@ianlandsman Having exclusive content on Spotify feels more similar to Netflix/Prime Video/Disney+ etc…

People will maintain multiple services, and go to the platform that has the show they want.

Secondary thought: why would this be different than what we’ve seen in video streaming?

For TV, folks just switch between Netflix, Prime, Apple+ to get the content they want.

Lots of folks in podcasting are worried about exclusive audio content (Rogan) on platforms like Spotify, Stitcher, and Luminary.

Question: can you see yourself switching the way you consume podcasts to get exclusive content like this?

@bryce Real estate prices in the USA are really weird.

You can buy a nice place on the beach in Florida, or a veritable mansion in the Midwest, for ~$600k.

But as soon as you get into the PNW / Colorado / Park City prices go ⬆️

SLC prices look decent though. 😎

@ramsey Governments around the world have spent trillions of dollars investing in internet infrastructure (the delivery mechanism for web apps).

Imagine if they invested the same in delivery mechanisms for brick-and-mortar shops (delivery robots, the postal service).

Arguably, if it weren’t for TCP/IP, HTTP, SMTP, etc being free (and open) protocols, web app profit margins would be as low as any other business.

Our “rents” are low because we get a lot for free.

If restaurants didn’t have to pay their rent, they’d have good margins too!

@JackEllis Most small businesses run with low margins.

If you’re an auto mechanic, you have to invest tens of thousands in tools and a garage.

Truck driver? You need a rig and fuel.

In tech we just live in a fantasy world where margins are high (for now).

All of you startup folks saying “just let the free market work” love to ignore all the free open-source tech we get to use to run our businesses.

(Not to mention the open protocols we depend on; many of which were funded by the government and academia)

@ScottHYoung I can almost guarantee you that most restaurants are not marking up their food 30% for all Grubhub orders.

Also: this is not a tax. These are the kinds of services charges that businesses feel they need to swallow “in order to compete.”

Jackasses (like me) in the tech sector think we’re “super awesome entrepreneurs.”

But we’re beniftting massively from open source and low fixed-costs.

And, with our high profit margins, we also have the luxury of making a few mistakes!

Brick-and-mortar businesses can’t.

App developers complain when Apple takes a 30% cut of sales.

But the profit margins on software are often 80%+.

Typical restaurant profits margins are 5%!!!

(Grubhub charges 15-30%!)

Grubhub is not “adding value” here.

They’re taking advantage of a business sector that has razor-thin margins, and is barely keeping its head above water.

They’re going to growth-hack their way to destroying the livelihood of all their customers.

This whole thing is antithetical to the spirit of the open web.

Remember when we wanted to index REAL information?

The LEAST these platforms (Yelp, Grubhub, Google) can do is show a real phone number for a local business.

“I have a new product idea...”

First questions to ask:

- What evidence is there that people want this?
- How many people want it? How much are they spending on this problem right now?
- How can you reach these folks, at scale?
- Why are you the right person to build it?

VCs are prone to a particular version of this.

They'll say something like: "Podcasting is sub-optimal because it's not centralized. Nobody owns the platform so it's hard to monetize it."

🤣 THAT'S WHY WE LOVE IT.

Founders have to be wary of "made up problems."

It's that inclination we have to say: "This [existing thing] is not-optimal so it *must* need a solution!"

In reality, people engage in non-optimal behavior all the time; in fact, they often *like* that behavior! 😜
