For people who co-host these types of podcasts, the biggest benefit is that it’s like regular therapy!

I often say: I would do my show with @jonbuda even if no one was listening, because it’s so healthy for us as individuals. 🥰

@jessedriftwood1 echoes this here:

What many makers really want in a podcast is that sudden, cathartic, realization:

“Holy shit. Somebody else feels the same way I do. I’m not alone in this.”

Podcasts for bootstrappers were the big winners of 2020.

In the absence of conferences and meetups, hearing other people give regular updates on their journey helped me feel connected. 🙏

(I especially benefitted from the times folks shared vulnerably about their experience)

And when future dreams become present, it sure is nice to enjoy them.

@astraflux It might be fine for some people; but not me! 😊

I like to “be somewhere, and enjoy it.” (Preferably for a good amount of time)

I don’t have much wanderlust.

@andreasjonssonn I definitely agree that “the desire of the future can make us miss the present.”

In some ways, that’s why I like “enjoying the destination.” It feels like the ultimate expression of “enjoying where you are.”

If you’re too satisfied with the journey, you could find yourself on a journey with no end.

College is great, but do you want to be in college for the rest of your life?

Dating a bunch of people is fine, but you might enjoy settling down with one person.

@andreasjonssonn I understand the “zen-ness” of that; but the actual destination matters quite a bit.

If you’re in a prison, you can make the best of your circumstances but that should never dissuade you from trying to get out.

@shaisc Gotcha.

For me, it’s more helpful to label that as “finding meaning in difficult times.”

That meaning has definitely given me the will to persist when things are hard.

(Although, sometimes “persisting” has meant changing my destination)

Sometimes you need to travel to Mordor, save Middle-earth, and come home again.

And once you’re home, you start living again: you eat a second breakfast, tend your garden, and smoke your pipe.

The reason you have the journey is to arrive so you can start living.

I’m not sure it’s always healthy to “try to find the joy in every journey.”

Some journeys suck!

But it sure is nice to arrive somewhere better.

For me, the joy of “having arrived” often lasts a long time.

I’m glad to have had the journey, but journeys aren’t always joyful! Often they’re stressful, painful, or difficult.

But once I arrive at my desired destination, it makes the journey feel worthwhile.

I’m not sure I buy the saying:

“It’s the journey, not the destination.”

Destinations matter!

Life is a series of destinations.

You pick a destination.
You journey towards it.
You arrive.

And, sometimes, you leave.

A concerning trend that accelerated in 2020: income inequality.

It's likely to get worse in 2021.

There are millions of folks who suffered economically during the pandemic. Without assistance, they won't be able to recover.

This will mean more homeless camps and social unrest.

For 2021-2022, I think these sectors will continue to suffer:

- oil & gas
- movie theaters
- business travel
- storefront retail
- targeted advertising
- commercial real estate
- gasoline & diesel vehicles

After the vaccine, people will be hungry to party, have adventures, see friends and family, and enjoy the bigger houses and recreational properties they bought during the pandemic.

They’ll also want to keep working remotely and travel less for business.

With a vaccine on the horizon, we're also going to see some businesses come roaring back.

In 2021-2022 I'm expecting to see growth in:

- Live music
- Coworking
- Gyms & fitness
- Travel & tourism
- Events & parties
- Alcohol & cannabis
- Coffee shops, pubs, restaurants

Note: the big winners in 2020 were the folks "selling pickaxes to gold miners."

Folks who:
- make software tools
- own a popular marketplace
- control strong distribution channels

will continue to win in 2021.

I know that Hey and Gmail both have separate areas for newsletters.

But when I’m in my inbox, I’m not in a mental zone for long reads.

Too often, email newsletters just get pushed to the “back shelf,” and never get read.
