Listening to @mattragland’s creator journey, I’m reminded that (in almost every case) new opportunities come from connections.

It’s who you know,
and who knows you.

You build trust, reputation, and connections through your work, and through your involvement in community.

@harriskenny Lol. It's difficult to know how the dynamics of that stuff work themselves out.

For content creators, you definitely need to have some passion, curiosity, and fulfilment from your topic.

Too many creators optimize their work solely around "what resonates the most."

But... you can't pay the bills with views, listens, likes, or retweets.

What you want is work that:

1. Fulfills you personally
2. Resonates with your audience
3. Sustains your lifestyle ($)

@renehentschel Again, I’m skeptical that ETH is going to be able to successfully move to PoS. (They’ve been trying to move to PoS for a long time).

The onus is for crypto folks to demonstrate that real efficiency is possible (before they deploy it at scale).

@renehentschel Yes. But it’s not all equal!

That’s the whole point:

- Cement is worse than wood frame
- Flying is worse than driving
- A gaming PC with giant GPUs is worse than a thin laptop

We need to actively reduce activities that emit more CO2.

@renehentschel In today’s context, it’s clear: that methodology doesn’t work anymore.

We don’t have the luxury of “move fast and break things” (we’ve broken too many things).

A looming climate crisis means everything (especially new tech) needs to be carefully considered.

@renehentschel That paper theoretically proposes that new blockchain tech will be less of a problem.

I’m fine if people do the research + develop the tech.

I’d just rather not have “money piling into the sector” until the theories are proven.

So I’m going to try to convince as many individuals as I can to stop investing in crypto until we figure out the ecological impacts. 👍

@jameslikesmagic Do you think disparate, un-targeted actions will be enough?

I’m concerned about our individual propensity to self-rationalize our behavior, actions, positions.

Feels like it needs to be collective action (the same collective action that helped us deal with CFCs and ozone)

Culturally, we’ve already accrued tons of legacy code and cruft (eating beef, driving cars, using gas for heat, flying in planes, cloud tech) that’s going to be difficult to refactor.

We don’t need to be introducing new, non-efficient tech (Bitcoin, NFTs) to this mix.

Not everything that can be minted, should be minted.

I’m from Alberta. There, the existence of the tar sands is a “nuanced topic, with lots of complexity” (jobs, historic ties, etc).

But we already knew, from the beginning, that the project would be a net negative for humanity.

If crypto folks are really committed to this experiment, they need to prove it now before too many institutional investors are invested.

We can hit pause until we know efficiency is possible.

@chriswallace @punchlinecopy I understand this argument. The problem with saying “it’s a small %” is it ignores:

- how that % will grow over time (as the trend increases)
- the need to pull back on all extraneous energy use (flights, Bitcoin, beef, etc)
- old transaction tech (USD) is far more efficient

I’m from Alberta, where they’ve had an open mind about fixing the tar sands forever (and making it more environmentally friendly).

How about they fix the energy consumption problem first?

The success of your product will be the culmination of all these factors:

- How strong was the "pull" from the market?
- What advantages did you have going in?
- Was your hypothesis? Did you execute on it? Were you right?
- Did you have the resources to build + promote it?

As a new founder, you can have all the conditions for success, but ultimately your vision for the product has to resonate with the market.

Your product/brand needs to have attributes that make it attractive to customers in that category (and provide enough reason to switch).

If you've been building up skills, reputation, and connections in a category, you have a competitive advantage.

The product you build should be a response to genuine demand.

There should be evidence that people *want* whatever you're building.

Evidence looks like:
- Folks currently buying something similar
- Folks spending time + energy to create their own solution (Excel, etc)
