Most of y'all will never know the joy of being a 12-year-old demoscene fan, eagerly anticipating Future Crew's newest drop on http://comp.sys.ibm.pc.demos, taking all day to download it, and watching it render in realtime on your 386 with your Soundblaster Pro turned up loud.

@patio11 That would have been a weird time!

I still want to know how much $$$ some of those early shareware successes were making.

When I was 20 I was perfecting my table layouts on Geocities.

Today, Gen-Z is like: “oh that’s cute. I just sold my 4th startup, sold a few Bitcoin, bought a mansion in Miami, and launched a $25 million rolling fund.” 😜

Omg. Yes.

ACiD could re-release all their ANSI art packs as NFTs and I’d go from “NFTs are dumb” to “take my money!!!”

But it really seems to depend on the dynamics of a particular loose culture, and the leadership.

Some loose cultures have a more egalitarian streak, where others really emphasize the power of the individual to stick out and do what they want.

For those of us who looked up to Jason and David, wrestling with this stuff is uncomfortable.

Basecamp's example is what inspired many of us to build our own companies.

But truthfully, this was a parasocial relationship. We didn't really *know* them. We only saw one side.

For those of us who share our thoughts/opinions with the world, this is a sobering reminder:

"Act like a scientist, not like a preacher.” (@AdamMGrant)

The problem with preaching strong beliefs is that it closes you off. You're not open to correction. You become entrenched.

@typeoneerror For most, it was their dream to work there.

I think when you’ve been somewhere a long time, and (up until now) enjoyed the work and the environment, it makes it harder to leave.

The folks I know who worked there weren’t looking to quit. Having to make a choice was a shock.

@nukemberg @dvassallo No, leadership is about doing the *right* thing (even when it might be unpopular).

Not every unpopular decision is a good decision.

This is a very bad decision. Losing 30%+ of your team, and erasing much of the goodwill it took you decades to build, is not “good.”

@dvassallo When a main tenet of your business philosophy is to “hire slowly and stay small,” you’re relying on a small group of talented people to do the work of a much larger team.

They lost ~20 linchpins today; people it took them decades to find, whom they hired carefully.

@dvassallo When 30%+ of your team quits in a single day, that’s not a sign of good leadership.

These were key people, some of whom had been with the company for 15 years. Committed, loyal team members.

This isn’t something a company easily comes back from.

I’m not applauding this at all.

@tillkruss They didn’t leave for the money.

These were life-long employees (some with 15 years there!). They enjoyed their work. They liked the team. They were well-paid.

They would have loved to stay.

This was about a series of bad leadership decisions. This could have all been avoided.
