@Ayo_Af I don't think customers necessarily gravitate to the best product, but rather the most desirable product.

Desire is usually a result of good:

1. Product / market fit
2. Product design + execution
3. Product marketing

@chris_hawk In my book, I recommend that you look for three things in a target market:

1. Purchasing power
2. Purchasing desire
3. Critical mass

@EricDiviney @seanwes Yes, you really need to execute these steps well:

1. Pick a good market
2. Discover what they desire
3. Build something that gives them the outcomes they want
4. Do it better than the competition

@codyschneiderxx Part of this is semantics, but I've found I'm better at recognizing what people truly want (and will pay for) as opposed to guessing what they need (and will pay for).

One feels prescriptive ("you need this!") the other is descriptive ("I'm listening, and you seem to want this")

@nbashaw What do you (or @stratechery) mean by "full monetization potential?"

Second, is "full monetization" something we want (or need)?

@iannuttall Haha. It's true.

But think, once we're doing these numbers annually...

$1M = $10M in Spotify money
$10M = $100M in Spotify money
$100M = $1,000,000,000 in Spotify money!

@heidi_helen Currently, podcasters have to submit manually, and about 60% have done so.

@_danielmeade Total podcasting economy is probably bigger than $500M, but...

Total ad rev for podcasts was only $314 million in 2017.

In 2015, Midroll Media was acquired for $50 million.

In 2018, Stuff Media (How Stuff Works) was acquired for $55 million.

@kalenjordan @earthlingworks @sudyk As @nwquah has pointed out: Gimlet's business model is actually super risky.

It requires a lot of up-front resources to develop a show, with no guarantee that the bet will pay off.

In some ways, the Spotify acquisition is their only way out (seeing as they took VC money).

@Patticus One exception: in the "dev" niche they've been doing original content successfully for years. (WWDC)

@Patticus I agree (this is historically true).

But they know they need to develop this expertise (especially with their new streaming service).

Hardware revenue is falling, they're looking increasingly to services + entertainment for new growth.

Can you livestream at 1080p without lag?

Finally, I tried @podcast_app.

Search rating: very good

Really friendly search UI.

Results: revealed ~30 matches when searching by topic (ordered newest to oldest)
