"Move fast & adapt" is a fine strategy in certain cases; but as an overarching philosophy it fails.

Napoleon's "move fast, attack fast" strategy worked in the short-term (and impressed his believers), but in the long-term failed: a "Pyrrhic victory."

The UN cites reducing air travel as the #1 way rich folks (that's us!) can reduce emissions.

"Lifestyle changes are a prerequisite for bridging the gap. Foregoing one long-haul return flight reduces annual personal emissions by 1.9 tCO2e per capita."

@swaycopy @niko_tinius @guardian I agree 💯.

Our addiction to air travel is a massive problem.

Part of my motivation for tweeting about it is to create awareness.

We need social, political, and corporate alignment on these issues. The only way (I know of) to get there is to spread knowledge about the problem.

@dwiskus @YouTubeLiaison @algorithm In Facebook’s case, they used Pages to attract new visitors, to encourage businesses to make FB their home on the web. As soon as they had enough leverage, they cut organic reach.

All the big platforms do this: convince people to build a following, and then limit organic reach.

As revealed by @jackconte on @HowIBuiltThis: there's a "risk/reward" imbalance between YouTube and indie creators.

Creators spend thousands of hours (and thousands of their own dollars) creating free content for YouTube.

YouTube benefits because they just need *moar content*.

🚩 The first red flag:

How can YouTube be creating 394,000 full-time jobs, when there are only 38,000 US channels with 100k+ subscribers and 5,000 channels 1 million+ subscribers?

On page 8:

"YouTube’s creative ecosystem contributed $20.5 billion to the US economy in 2020 and supported 394,000 full-time equivalent jobs."

Sounds impressive, doesn't it? That's a lot of creators earning a FT income!

But those numbers are incredibly misleading.

Love these anecdotes. This one, from a 13 year-old respondent, is great:

Gotta keep that room tidy! 😄

@stauffermatt There’s lots of anecdotal evidence that crypto enthusiasts are primarily techies with financial means.

The underlying pillars of the tech itself (the need to have a reliable device, secured wallet, remember your password, electricity, and internet) make it inaccessible for many.

@magdalenakala @hnshah It’s also reasonable to challenge a claim (or burgeoning movement).

Shifting away from the status-quo has real world effects, which can be positive, benign, or negative.

It’s worth exploring the underlying assumptions, and possible outcomes.

Transformative criticism FTW.

@EricBranner There are apps for iPhone (like Camo and Reincubate) that do this; but I don't want to have to plug my iPhone into my computer, and set it up on a tripod, each time.

I like something that's permanently there. I just click "on" and I'm on.
