In the tech world, "optimism" seems to be code for "let's just not think about the consequences, as long as it makes us money."

This is like calling Harry Markopolos "cynical" for investigating Madoff.

"Why are you asking all these hard questions Harry? Why can't you be more of an optimist? Can't you see all this wealth that Madoff is creating?"

Crypto boosters labeling critics as "cynical losers" is an ad hominem play.

(put down the people with concerns; don't respond to their concerns directly)

It's possible to be an optimist and also be careful & mindful.

It's possible to be an optimist and still thoroughly evaluate new ideas.

It's possible to be an optimist and still consider the deeper ethical, moral, and structural issues at play.

@scottbolinger Casinos (gambling) and securities have lots of oversight: regulations and laws that govern what operators and participants can (and cannot) do.

Currently, the "hype and opportunism" in crypto has no real checks and balances.

Looking at @levelsio's response to @stripe's @patrickc.

Which of these do you want the most?

For me it's:

+1 Stripe as main business account
+1 Stripe liability insurance

2. Start a screen recording in Quicktime.

When done recording:

1. Stop screen recording.
2. Open up minimized camera recording. Stop recording there.

I thought that was for other people.

But I learned so much empathy that day. These things that only seem to happen to other people can happen to me."

Kyle and I started the @productpeopletv podcast together in 2012.

Ever since then, we've been each other's cheerleaders.

Back then, we were starry-eyed hopeful startup founders.

It's incredibly gratifying to see both of us finding success in the SaaS game since then.

@nbashaw Great post!

There's another fundamental critique of web3: how will this truly affect society?

To paraphrase Christensen:

"Society is confronted with opportunities to not follow the standard we set for ourselves; you can end up with a very different society than you intended."

@ianlandsman The difference is the global top 10% is a sizeable group, with a sizeable carbon footprint.

"The emissions share of the top 10% of income earners is around 36–49% of the global total, whereas the lowest 50% of income earners account for around 7–15% of emissions."

Again, I'm not saying we can *never* fly.

I'm just suggesting that instead of flying 6x per year, we could fly 1-2x per year.

(It's similar to reducing your alcohol consumption. An occasional drink is OK, but drinking every day is probably a problem).

I used to believe that we should stop asking individuals to fix the climate crisis.

Now I see it clearly: we need to stop asking the world's *poor* to reduce emissions.

"The world’s wealthy need to cut 90%+ percent of their carbon emissions, to get to their carbon fair share."

The UN cites reducing air travel as the #1 way rich folks (that's us!) can reduce emissions.

"Lifestyle changes are a prerequisite for bridging the gap. Foregoing one long-haul return flight reduces annual personal emissions by 1.9 tCO2e per capita."

This is what I'm trying to highlight: look at the exorbitant emissions from the "top 1%".

The UN's definition of top 1%? Anyone who made more than $109K in 2015.

For most of us in tech, *that's us*. The burden is on us to decrease our emissions.

@nbashaw I've read all the links in this thread, and I'm still confused.

Web3 "server" & "database" – are these actually better alternatives than what we have right now?

- isn't AWS way more affordable and performant?
- isn't there storage limitations that still make SQL better?

@PierreDeWulf In 🇨🇦 a small-business corp (less than $500k in income) pays 9%.

Personal tax rates vary.

If you paid yourself $100k in dividends, you’d pay about 15.47% in tax.

If you paid yourself a $100k salary, you’d pay about 25.36% in tax.
