@yongfook @TransistorFM @jsonperl @HelenRyles Montreal is such a cool city. It’s relatively easy (“central”) for us all to fly to. There’s lots to do and see. Amazing food. Beautiful at this time of year.

And yes, we kind of all voted in Slack.

I highly recommend @sherrywalling’s book for any human who has experienced loss, sadness, ache, mourning, hurt, or grief.

Last night I finished reading @sherrywalling’s book, Touching Two Worlds.

It explores a difficult topic: grief.

I thought it was going to be hard and heavy to read. I was wrong!

It’s an incredibly uplifting and hopeful book. Probably the most powerful book I’ve read this year

👋 Hey Montreal friends.

The Transistor team will be in Montreal from Oct 2-7, and there might some opportunities for some get-togethers.

If you're in the area and want to hang out, fill out this form, and we'll see if we can connect!

@photomatt Side note: as someone who’s paid for premium Tumblr themes, I would love it if we had the ability (again) to remove the Tumblr chrome / popups from our website.

This used to be possible, but it’s not anymore.

"People might try out scenarios that are quite dark and might not be healthy. There's the threat that their chat logs will be exposed. An unethical organization could use the model we're training for nefarious purposes."

"Replika currently allows people to converse with avatars of loved ones who have passed away, which seems to aid with grief and reduce suffering over time."

I'd like to see more tech people take an "ethics first approach" to new ideas/tech.

I propose doing an "ethical S.W.O.T. analysis" in the earliest stages of an idea.

Thinking through what a (realistic) healthy cadence looks like is important

Your format delivers a ton of value; I'm glad you've figured out a healthy workflow for it!

(Compare that to the effort required to produce a daily vlog which I've seen tons of people burn out on)

Just so it's clear: I'm specifically referencing the overdemanding cadence/schedule creators put themselves on.

(Not the underlying medium [YouTube, podcasts, etc])

Some mediums are more demanding than others, but it's often the demands we put on ourselves that are unhealthy.

For example, many people become creators/entrepreneurs so that they can spend more time with their families.

But then they get themselves on a work treadmill where they're so overcommitted they don't have time or energy to spend with their families.

If your intention is to be a creator so that you can _____, make sure you're not missing out on _____ by putting yourself on an overdemanding treadmill.

"I'm going to make a daily vlog"
"I'm going to publish a weekly podcast"
"I'm going to send a monthly newsletter"

It's common for creators to have big ambitions.

But be sure to ask yourself:

👉 What is this (ultimately) in service of?
👉 Is this the best way to achieve it?

4 years ago, @jonbuda and I started a podcast about building a software company, right as we were starting @TransistorFM.

Our mission was to show people they could build a sustainable, "calm" company without having to raise millions in venture capital:

Business isn't a zero-sum game,

In business, "winning" means achieving a better life for yourself, your team, and your customers.

If you're profitable, have an awesome product, enjoy serving your customers, earn good money, and work with amazing people then you're winning!!!

But, isn’t Sketch also a winner? From the outside they seem to have millions of paying customers.

Isn’t that a win?

The key is to get in motion.

It’s what you discover along the way that will likely make the biggest difference.

But if you’re standing still, stuck trying to figure out which direction to go, you’ll miss out on that discovery.

Many creators accidentally find success in one area while actively pursuing something completely different.

Often what “pops” is the side thing to the main thing you’re creating.

The key is to stay in motion: be curious, experiment, and watch for the elements that resonate.
