@danmartell Is that the implication you were going for?

By leaving it open-ended the way you did, I think the most common interpretation will be:

"Folks who are underpaid in their current job are underpaid because they don't have the right expertise [coding, management, etc]"

BTW – even before the pandemic boosted demand for workers (and increased salaries), "switching jobs to increase your wages" was an observed phenonemon.

Also, how you negotiate your salary (unfortunately?) greatly determines what you'll earn.

"The right skills" is part of the package you'll need to earn more in your career, but there are many other variables:

- the employment market you're in (recession, etc)
- the geographic labor market you're in (EU vs USA)
- the size and type of company you work for

While the job market has recently gotten more competitive, "changing jobs" has historically been a good way to increase your pay (without having to acquire new skills).

People are underpaid for all sorts of reasons.

Robots can easily cut a precise line through sheet metal but have immense difficulty opening a door lock (which requires low-level dexterity and sensorimotor skills).

Historically, we've disrupted the low-hanging fruit of human labor (the plow, the switchboard, manufacturing), but the "human dexterity" forms of labor (carpentry) are largely unchanged, even after hundreds of years.

Despite all of our advances in robotics and artificial intelligence, machines aren't even close to being able to replace most trade work (plumbing, carpentry) and repair work (fixing a dishwasher).

Robots and AI are no match for human dexterity and specialized problem-solving.
