@FredRivett vanity probably plays a role.

Sometimes it's genuine passion for the topic.

Regardless, without attention you can't do much.

For a customer, a product is just a means to an end.

It doesn't need to be SaaS, an app, or hardware: it just needs to solve a problem.

Don't start by thinking about what *type* of product you'd like to build.

Rather, ask:
1. Who do I want to help?
2. How can I help them?

@adamwathan in my roadtrip example, it's definitely switching from: "kids all play solo on iPads" to "kids playing together on Nintendo."

@adamwathan You're right. The job (in this example) is "keep my kids entertained during a long car ride."

@adamwathan I’m thinking of my minivan during a road trip.

Right now: each kid is on their own device. No wifi so they can’t play together.

The struggle with mobile gaming right is that it's solo: on a long road-trip your kids aren't playing with each other. This addresses that.

There's a whole history of "cool" product ideas that didn't get traction because they didn't actually make customers' lives better.

@topka it depends.

Lots of products that were built to be cool have failed:

- New Coke
- The Zune
- Segway (“cool tech”)
- Google Wave

The challenge is sometimes you really want to build X.
But the customer just wants Y.

You want to make something cool.
They want results.

The only job of your product is to make the user’s life better.

When users are making progress they don’t care about the packaging.

It’s not the “form” of your product that matters; it’s the FUNCTION.

Too many founders are focused on the form (SaaS, iOS app, etc.)
