The best product ideas come from observing a common struggle (or desire) in a group of people, where you have the skills, expertise, and experience to deliver the outcomes they want.

Most of the trolls I've encountered have very few followers.

I have massive respect for people who want to make things better. They do research, come up with new ideas, and work to make progress.

Conversely, folks who are quick to criticize (but have no suggestions of their own) are just a drag to be around.

@BenPNicholson Bots are a problem (that should definitely be dealt with separately).

Sally's idea has merits for normal users who are being onboarded.

Other networks, like Stackoverflow, YouTube, Hacker News, have used a similar strategy and its worked quite well.

@rezzz @SallyPoulsen Let's take the idea on its own merits, and set aside the problem of bots.

Don't you think on boarding users that way (which YouTube and other networks already does) is a good solution?

@BenPNicholson @SallyPoulsen Ben, do you have a better idea?

I think that gamifying Twitter’s onboarding is a good idea.

YouTube has been doing this for years (as you get more subscribers and more engagement you’re rewarded).

But...

If I didn’t love the BC ⛰ so much, I’d probably build my next startup in Ottawa:

- home to @Shopify
- affordable housing
- good employment options for other family members
- lots of local talent to hire when you need to scale
- 🛫 1 hr to Toronto, 2 to NYC
- 🇨🇦 capital city

Canada’s not perfect, and there are definitely things we miss out on:

- the serendipity of SF & NYC
- lack of access to some cool startups like @simple, @RevolutApp

BUT, for me the pros of 🇨🇦 far outweigh the cons (especially for bootstrapping).

Most solopreneurs in 🇨🇦 (@wesbos, @adamwathan, myself)...

- charge in USD
- pay lower corporate tax than in 🇺🇸
- don’t worry about health insurance
- have access to high-speed internet

It’s a great place to start a bootstrapped company.

How likely is it that our users will renew their subscription?

Are they satisfied with the service they’re getting?

How much are they using the product?
