"Too many people's growth "strategy" is to submit to PH, close their eyes, and cross their fingers. Here's the right mindset: try lots of things, and don't expect to find some sort of magical set-it-and-forget-it growth hack." – @csallen, @IndieHackers

I'm chatting with @mikeherreraTD in 20ish minutes about 25 years of @mxpx, the music industry, and the Kickstarter for their new album. 👍

What else should I ask him about?

About @SingleFounder:

Mike has one of the most recognizable voices in bootstrapping.

He helped create the Startups for the Rest of Us podcast, which is what inspired me to want to become a solopreneur (and a podcaster!).

Also: his anecdotes on Facebook are really funny.

About @adamwathan:

Adam is a machine. He doesn't back down from hard problems; he digs in. It's one reason why so many Laravel developers trust him: he helps them find answers to difficult questions.

He's also become a formidable businessperson, public speaker, and podcaster.

About @garrettdimon:

Garrett wrote one of the best books about starting a SaaS ever (Starting and Sustaining).

He's a no-nonsense, practical thinker, who knows about facing adversity (and coming out on the other side).

Mojca can play a mean ukulele. She's a smart business person, but she's optimizing for a good life first (good coffee, sunshine, fast cars).

She's also really good at FB ads.

About @patio11:

Patrick is one of the best storytellers I've met.

And he's been sharing his story, and the lessons he learned along the way, from the time he created his first software company.

He doesn't always send a newsletter, but when he does, I read it right away.

About @csallen:

He took the idea of doing founder interviews to a whole new level.

His site, @IndieHackers, is well-built, beautifully designed, and tells founders' stories better than anyone else.

Now Indie Hackers is one of the most vibrant startup communities on the web.

@cliffordoravec Hardest part having a big group: you really need an MC to lead the conversation. The rest of the group almost needs to act like a panel, responding to the MC's leadership.

Also: audio quality. Make sure everyone has goods mics, a good recording env, and are recording local audio

@KrisColvin You're right.

If the person paying for the product values other people in the org, you need to listen to all of them.

For example, seeing a group of customers who are using my product in an unexpected way is interesting.

That real-life usage is helpful, and can inform future development.

Helping those customers make more progress is a worthy goal.

Talk is cheap.

Anyone can give you their opinion on your product.

It's the folks that have chosen to invest real $$$ in your idea that have earned the right to give you feedback.

(And EVEN THEN you shouldn't act on all of their ideas)

@clayhebert I've found that surveys / feedback forms don't work great (UserVoice etc...)

But, doing customer interviews (over Skype / phone) really works.

Don’t build features for people who aren’t paying you!

More often than naught, you'll build the feature and they *still* won't sign up. 😅

There's no sense in trying to please folks who aren't users yet.

Ultimately, a business serves whoever is paying them.

(Regardless of who the end-user is)

If you sell ads to advertisers, you'll be building your product around what advertisers value. The needs of users will be secondary.

@TransistorFM @megamaker Another nice thing about Ruby: it’s code that’s readable by humans who don’t program every day.

Makes it way easier for non-devs to collaborate on projects. 👍
