But for us as individuals, this concept of gradual improvement is still helpful.

The tiny wins we're making each day *do* add up over time.

Side note:

This is also what causes inequality.

Generations of actions lead some groups to a sustained advantage over other groups.

When one group (over centuries) gains too much power, they become so entrenched that other groups can't move upward.

That's bad for society.

It's the actions we take every day, for years and years, that eventually lead up to a given result.

Nothing is a "sudden success."

It's years of tiny investments that produce the big payoff.

Since reading this @timoreilly piece, I've been thinking a lot about

"Gradually, then suddenly."

Often, we want our success now, "suddenly."

But true success seems to happen only after a gradual progression.

I think this dovetails with something @timoreilly has been talking about lately:

But true success seems to happen "gradually, and then suddenly."

🕹️ The Wizard

My wife and I were leaving on a date, and my mom was wondering what a good movie might be for the kids.

I remember loving this movie as a kid, so I recommended it.

When we got back, mom was like:

🤦‍♂️ "That movie was terrible. The kids hated it."

Whoa. If this news from @Podnews is correct, Anchor's valuation multiple was much lower than Gimlet's:

Anchor
- $14.4M in funding
- Acquired for $50M
- Multiple: 3.5x

Gimlet
- $28.5M in funding
- Acquired for $250M
- Multiple: 9x

🤔 Usually valuations are = Software > Content.

@drewwilson I'd say podcasting is having its gold rush now:

- Spotify buys Anchor for $?M
- Spotify buys Gimlet for $230M
- Castbox (podcast app) has raised $30M
- Himalaya (podcast app) just raised $100M
- How Stuff Works acquired for $55 million in 2018

@_danielmeade Total podcasting economy is probably bigger than $500M, but...

Total ad rev for podcasts was only $314 million in 2017.

In 2015, Midroll Media was acquired for $50 million.

In 2018, Stuff Media (How Stuff Works) was acquired for $55 million.

This Spotify deal could also increase the total number of podcast listeners.

Currently, only about 48 million 🇺🇸 residents listen to podcasts weekly.

Spotify has 87 million paying subscribers, and 191 million active users.

In 2018, Stuff Media (How Stuff Works) was acquired for $55 million.

@delk Really? I'd have thought Gimlet was doing the most revenue there.

Who's left?
- Pineapple Street Media
- Pacific Content

I guess I'm thinking more B2B plays.

I'm not including stuff like:
- Joe Rogan
- Pushkin Industries (Gladwell's company)

For example, Omny Studio (one of my competitors) just crossed $300k in MRR.

- That's ~$3.6M in ARR
- If they sold at a 10x multiple (that's high) that'd be $36 million.

If Spotify is spending $500 million, they could buy 14 companies like Omny!

It's arguable that with $500 million, Spotify could buy the ENTIRE podcast industry.

- every production company
- most of the smaller podcast players

$500M is a huge amount of money for the tiny podcast industry.
