I'm curious: did your team recently switch software?

1. What instigated the change?
2. Who instigated the change?
3. How did the "change agent" facilitate the change?
4. What, ultimately, convinced the boss to make the change?

Disney is one of America's most iconic companies.

It took them 10 years to achieve even a baseline of success.

10 years!

Are we willing to put forward that kind of effort, in a single direction, for that long?

Are we willing to take our knocks, and keep going?

It got me thinking again about this concept of: "Gradually, and then suddenly."

For years and years, the Disney brothers are gradually clawing their way forward. It's slow and painful.

And then, suddenly, all those years start to pay off. Everything seems to improve at once.

For years, Disney was knocking on every door, desperate for meetings. People ignored him and treated him badly.

And now, a decade later, he's the toast of Hollywood. Everyone wants to meet him.

Suddenly, he doesn't need to bang on doors; they're just opening for him.

And suddenly, around 1933, everything starts to change for Disney.

They get their first real hit ("The three pigs"). Mickey Mouse gets popular. They invent Donald Duck and people go crazy for him.

I'm reading the Walt Disney biography, and what's most striking is how long it took him to get any traction at all.

The Disney brothers start their company in 1923, and basically eat shit for 10 years.

Year after year of failed attempts, bad deals, and projects gone bad.

This tweet was inspired by reading @r00k and @derrickreimer's show notes for Art of Product. 😜

(Another really good show about bootstrapping)

The things I've done since I started my career 18 years ago are what brought me here today:

- The side projects I've made
- The articles I've written
- The podcasts I've recorded
- The events I've attended
- The people I've built relationships with
- The jobs I've worked

Most worthwhile accomplishments are a long time in the making.

Don't expect to start and make it overnight!

It's going to take years of small wins.

Before we launched, a lot of what we thought would be true ended up not being true.

A lot of it was aspirational truisms we'd gleaned from the bootstrapping community.

But you don't really know until you launch what kind of customers you're going to have.

"A lot of the decisions we make are about 'what kind of identity do I want to have?'

Whether you choose Vue.js or React has a lot to do with your identity (and the group you want to belong to)."

There is a difference between "wait and see" and procrastination.

With procrastination, you know what you're supposed to do, but you're stalling.

But sometimes, you don't know how to proceed yet. The path is foggy. "Wait and see" is waiting until the fog lifts.

Our natural inclination is to respond to situations immediately:

"I've got to make a decision quickly! Be decisive!"

But... I've found it's often better to wait.

I wrote about it here:
