@rsobers Yup, I agree that having a specific group to target in the beginning is helpful (especially for finding marketing channels).

The caveat is that (no matter how specialized you go) you need to find enough buyers.

@axsuul Yes, a niche is helpful for gaining a foothold (especially when looking for good marketing channels).

The caveat is that (no matter which approach you take) you need to find a market with enough buyers.

@joshuaanderton Yes!

The caveat is that targeting a subset isn’t enough on its own.

This is why I’m thinking it’s better to look for evidence of active commerce, rather than hunt for a niche.

(A niche can be a helpful foothold for marketing though.)

When you’re looking for a market, whether something is small (or specialized) doesn’t matter as much as “is there a sizable group here who are actively spending money to make their lives better.”

The definition of “niche” is:

“relating to products, services, or interests that appeal to a small, specialized section of the population.”

Here’s my concern: just because it’s small (or specialized) doesn’t mean it’s profitable.

Niches ≠ Riches

Another good filter could be:

“How many folks are actively looking for a solution?”

This approach can work, but can also produce false-positives (because there’s no proof that people will pay).

I’m still not convinced that entrepreneurs should be looking for a “niche” market.

Whether or not a market is “niche” isn’t a distinguishing factor for success.

What matters more:

“How much money is being spent in this market?”

“How they really act.”
