Bigger orgs seem to have so much cruft (compared to 1-5 person indie companies):

- tons of internal politics
- extraneous process, KPIs, meetings
- layers of management

Personally, I feel like I get better service + a better product from small indies.

@sfermigier @TimVanDijck I’m not trying to debate the policy issues.

But I have a handful of EU friends who had to spend days migrating their servers when that ruling came down.

Regardless of the overriding policy issues; it gives North American startups an edge.

@m1guelpf I’m not saying those initiatives aren’t “good;” just that the implementation of these policies puts a significant burden on businesses (when compared to North America)

@m1guelpf Restrictions on where you can host your data, cookie laws, and other privacy laws slow everything down.

Also: VAT compliance, GDPR compliance.

@sfermigier I believe that the way taxation and privacy laws are implemented in the EU puts bootstrapped startups at a disadvantage.

Truthfully, starting a bootstrapped company in 🇨🇦 has huge advantages (when compared to other countries):

- Public healthcare
- Free-trade agreements with 🇺🇸
- None of the red tape and bureaucracy of the 🇪🇺
- Federal small business tax rate is 9%
- Banks offer USD accounts https://twitter.com/SloanCam/status/1319341446596595716

@adii Can you give me an example of a business that fits your definition?

(I suppose this is more common in B2C?)

@adii But isn't there always some form of "demonstrated demand?"

For @arvidkahl and Feedback Panda it was: "Remote teachers teaching English are cobbling together their own solutions."

For WooCommerce it was: "People keep trying to add e-commerce to their WordPress site"

When brainstorming new ideas, always figure out:

"Are people already searching/paying for this?"

If they're not looking for a solution, how are you going to get them to find you?

Ideas for good opportunities be in 2021?

1. Tools that enable individual creators to publish and monetize their work. (memberships, community)

2. SaaS that has gone "upmarket" (to enterprise) and left SMBs behind.

3. Tools/teaching that help devs do their work better/easier.

Seeds almost always sprout where you've been preparing the soil. 🌱

Likewise, good ideas almost always reveal themselves in places where you've put in the groundwork.

First, find fertile ground: industries, sectors, technologies, groups, trends that are showing potential.

@dvassallo Surprised you were able to get land that cheap in the PNW!

Up here in BC, especially in the southern interior, lots are super expensive.

@AngeZanetti When we started Product People in 2012, I remember thinking I was late to the game! 🤣

I think there's always room for something new, especially if you're bringing something unique & real to the table.

Podcasting opened up my world.

Through the show, I was able to connect with the most incredible people. Many of these people became my friends.

These connections lead me to almost every opportunity that's come my way.

We decided to call the podcast "Product People."

Kyle made the artwork, and we started planning our initial episodes.

(Check out our list of "celebs" we wanted to interview! 😜)

Initially, we thought it'd be a podcast about Product Management (we were both PMs at the time).

But, it quickly became clear that we were both interested in building and launching our own products.

(This was the 🌱 of things to come)

I should mention: Kyle and I had only hung out a few times in-person.

I'd recently moved away from Edmonton, and hadn't talked to him in a few months.

If he hadn't taken the initiative to reach out, my life might have turned out a lot different! 😜

On Sep 12, 2012, @kylefox sent me a DM that changed my life forever.

It resulted in me changing my career, earning more money, meeting most of my current friends, growing an audience online, and (ultimately) building @TransistorFM.

Kyle asked if I wanted to start a podcast.

@smgrieser Nice! I've been doing downhill with my two youngest sons for the past few years.

I'm TERRIBLE, but I really enjoy it too.

I ended up buying a $2900 Ghost bike from MEC. Nothing too crazy, but decent for my ability. 😉

People here with hot tubs:

• are they a pain to maintain?
• are they expensive to run? (Electricity wise?)
• regrets?
