Questions to ask when exploring a new market:

1. Are they searching for what you're thinking of building?
2. How do you know? What evidence do you have?
3. How motivated are they? How willing to pay?
4. Are they already convinced they "need X," or do they still need convincing?

"Inertia" explains why the podcasting industry saw a huge bump during the initial lockdown.

Folks were like: "OK! Now's the time. I'm finally going to start that podcast I've been dreaming about."

The lockdown disrupted them. It gave them the momentum they needed.

In my experience, it's not worth chasing prospects who aren't already making an effort.

You want self-motivated customers: folks who are hungry for a solution.

"F*ck this, I'm fixing [this problem] today."

Removing friction is helpful for folks already committed to putting in the effort though. ๐Ÿ‘

The most powerful concept in product marketing is inertia:

People, generally, continue to do what they're already doing.

(Or, they keep "not doing" what they're already not doing. ๐Ÿ˜‰)

The two youngest are really close.

But they're all close in the sense that they like each other. ๐Ÿ˜‰

But my new plan for domination is to just have @ianlandsman on every episode forever. (I have him locked up in my podcast closet right now).

Also planning on improving ratings by removing myself from the podcast.

@Shpigford Sadly.

I can see why many parent opt for homeschooling (but weโ€™ve never quite been up for that).

Iโ€™ve have one of our kids in private school now. I wish that we could just use the public system... but the private system (so far) has been significantly better.

@Shpigford Iโ€™ve had that exact struggle.

It definitely feels like (at least) a 10-year project to make any significant change at the local level.

And by then.... all my kids will be out of school.

Had a terrible sleep last night because I watched Interstellar for the first time with my family and it blew my mind and I woke up at 2am and just cycled through all the crazy events in the movie over and over again in an existential panic.

Anyways, how's your Monday going? ๐Ÿ˜œ

@saaspnr I agree that those things are shitty.

But eventually, business bets need to provide financial returns.

It can't be "I get the lifestyle, but sacrifice the financial."

Over the long term, you're going to need financial returns.

@brandonklotz When I say "optimize your resume" what I really mean is: "creating more leverage for companies to give you the big $$$ salary."

That's:
- Working your way up in an industry/sector/tech stack
- Networking and meeting the right people
- Getting consistent raises and promotions

Leaving a career path (and starting a business) carries this ironic risk:

๐Ÿ“ˆ If your company succeeds, your value as a potential employee goes way up!

๐Ÿ“‰ If your company fails, and you spent years not climbing the corporate ladder, your value as an employee goes down.

Often, being an entrepreneur means foregoing consistent promotions and opportunities in your industry.

Starting a business means you're no longer climbing the corporate ladder.

In many cases, those become lost years. You can't get those lost opportunities back.

@ianjanicki For many career paths, entrepreneurship means foregoing consistent promotions and opportunities in the industry.

I worked in non-profits until I was 28. I learned a ton and gained many skills, but that experience wasn't rewarded in the market when I was looking for work. ๐Ÿ˜‰

A common self-delusion is: "My lifestyle is way better, so who cares about my bank balance?"

Money provides security. Money provides margin.

You want both: money + lifestyle.

(Don't sacrifice either for the other!)
