@boaticus @jitbit Dev focused courses often have benefit-driven copy, but I think sales are mostly driven by personal brands.

For invoicing software, I think customers know what they're looking for ("invoicing software"), they search it, find a site that looks reputable, and buy.

@louisnicholls_ My thoughts all fall under the umbrella of “the market you’re in will determine most of your growth.”

I’ve worked in categories that had low demand. In some cases I could “juice conversion” by highlighting benefits.

But overall, a category with strong demand was better.

@louisnicholls_ In my experience, “the long tail” doesn’t actually drive that much business.

Brand awareness + WoM + keyword searches drives most SaaS revenue.

This has applied in all sorts of different product categories.

It might be different in DTC (I don’t have experience with that).

As someone who is constantly updating billing info in Stripe, modifying plans, updating invoices (adding VAT info) I am honestly flabbergasted that anyone administrating billing plans would want that spread across multiple billing platforms.

@WaterlooAlex I’m honestly befuddled that anyone would want anything other than Stripe (or similar) as their “single source of truth” for subscriptions.

How do you have that set up practically? You have have a webhook for Apple subscriptions that notifies a central billing system?

@WaterlooAlex That sounds incredibly un-ideal, and seems like it would have a ton of bad edge cases.

@engers Yes, but in this case, Apple says they can't disable IAP.

So some % of customers will be able to sign up for Apple subscription... which complicates everything.

Basecamp *wants* to use a single billing system (the one they have set up for their web app).

@engers It's not about them being "technical" or not.

This is about consumer behavior: if they have to update their credit card (add new billing info), churn goes up.

Higher likelihood of failed/missed payments.

@engers You’re missing my point. Anytime you’re asking the customer to update their credit card, you’re dramatically increasing the chances of losing that customer.
