@avclark In my experience, dynamic ads eventually lead to this, because the tech is designed to treat ads like “inventory.”

The creative element isn’t considered.

The dynamic ads aren’t smart enough to consider the context surrounding the ad spot.

A jarring dynamically-inserted ad.

Obnoxious, loud, and ill-timed; completely ruins this podcast’s narrative flow.

I’ll take host-read ads over this any day. 🙉

@mnlfrgr I’d love to see some studies on this.

My gut instinct is that most coffee shop owners search “email marketing” or “email newsletter” see MailChimp, ActiveCampaign, Campaigner, and just sign up for that.

The top 3 links (or ads) get most of the traffic (and most of the sales)

A pre-made template is a powerful way for getting people in motion.

Having a starting point is really motivating for humans.

@KateBour Curious: what jobs do you hire marketing podcasts to do in your life, Kate?

For me, I often listen to business podcasts in the morning, on the way to the office, to give myself new ideas and inspiration.

There are many marketing channels you can use for your business, but (for me) these two have consistently outperformed everything else:

1. Intent-based searches on Google
2. Word-of-mouth referrals

A few that come to mind:

- Kale: was originally used for decorative uses, but was repositioned as health food in the 1990s.
- Lacroix: hipsters looking to cut back on sugar helped reposition the brand, and triple the company’s revenue.

Sometimes, lackluster products can succeed when they’re repositioned for a different market.

Can you folks think of any examples?

@ow Yeah, it’s pretty bleak.

For personal banking there’s Simplii and Tangerine, but they have no branches (if you need that).

For business banking... it’s just the worst.

This part in “The Timeless Way of Building” is incredible:

“We can come alive only to the extent the buildings and towns we live in are alive. To understand this clearly, we must first recognize that what a town or building is, is governed, above all, by what is happening there”
