Why can’t we stream TV in Canada?

Can't display this video in your regionWhat happens to digital media when it hits the border?  It stops.  Those cool media streaming sites like Hulu.com, where you can watch hit shows and movies, they don’t work in Canada.

I’m still trying to figure out why.

This is a great question… I too have been frustrated by that same screen. I suspect Shaw has a hand in this.

This has nothing to do with Shaw. It has everything to do with licensing deals – the content from Hulu, etc. is only licensed for viewing in the States. Canadian networks would be (rightly) cranky if Canucks could catch the shows that the networks are paying big bucks for…and until the Canadian networks get their act together (say, joining Hulu which is a collaboration of US networks, or creating Hulu.ca).

On a practical note, if you look hard enough, you can find proxy servers that will let you watch US streams.
